Why Is My Water Pressure So Low?

Are you tired of washing dishes, taking showers or cleaning laundry with low water pressure? Homeowners who suffer from low water pressure often have a difficult time with basic tasks, because chores seem to take twice as long. Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to pinpoint the exact cause of your water pressure issue. From pipe leaks and punctures to problems with city pipes, there are many potential culprits. At Neighborhood Plumbing, we help Pittsburgh, PA area home and business owners have the plumbing they need to stay healthy, clean and productive. We want to help you achieve the same results in your home. Here are a few of the possible reasons why you’re dealing with low water pressure, and what you can do to fix it.

Pipe Leaks

When you have leaks and punctures in your pipes, water will be released as it passes through your plumbing system. If there is a severe leak, or multiple problem areas, it could result in low water pressure. Check for signs of water leaks such as foundation cracks, pools of water on your lawn, mold growth, saggy ceilings or bulging drywall. Getting a professional plumbing inspection can help you discover leaks in areas that are more difficult to pinpoint, like those buried beneath the ground or hiding in the subflooring.

Pressure Regulator

A failing pressure regulator can sometimes be to blame for low water pressure. Because they are designed to regulate the pressure of water in your pipes, it can cause fluctuations if it begins to deteriorate or malfunction. If you suspect that this is the cause, it’s important to have it repaired or replaced as soon as possible. A sudden rise in water pressure could damage your pipes and plumbing fixtures.

Main Shut Off Valve

Sometimes, especially after a plumbing repair, the main shut off valve to your home could be left partially closed. If you’re experiencing a sudden dip in water pressure after a recent repair or maintenance service, it’s a good idea to check the valve and ensure it is fully open.

Water Meter Valve

There is also another shut-off valve that controls the water coming into your home. This one is connected to the water meter, and is normally only used by utility workers. In many cases the valve can be accidentally left partially closed as well, particularly if there have been recent repairs or projects with your city’s plumbing. Unfortunately, you may not always be informed that work was done so you might want to check and see if the valve is properly turned.
