Types Of Valves Used In Plumbing

Plumbing is a network of pipes, fixtures, and other apparatus used to convey liquids — unadulterated water and human waste (among other things) — and gases that carry them to their destination. In its most basic form, plumbing consists of roughly two parts: A delivery system for fluids, with an outlet and possibly an inlet connected to a source of water or another pipe delivering its contents; and a distribution system made up of branches into which individual outlets may lead. Neighborhood Plumbing can dispatch a reliable plumber when you need a plumbing repair to keep everything moving smoothly.

Gate Valves

Gate valves are one of the most common valves in plumbing systems. A gate valve is a hand-operated valve consisting of a disk that can be rotated to open or close the flow of water.

The disk is attached to a rod that moves up and down when you rotate the disk to open or close the valve. The rod is called a spindle, and it allows for two positions: open and closed. Gate valves are typically used for on/off applications such as hot water heating systems and hydronic radiant floor heating systems.

Ball Valves

Ball valves control the flow of water, gas, or steam. They are designed to allow for complete shut-off and full flow. They are commonly used in residential and commercial applications like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. They are also used in industrial settings such as manufacturing plants and power plants.

They are available in both plastic and metal materials of different sizes. The plastic ones are usually used for low-pressure applications, while the metal ones can handle high pressures. The plastic ball valves have handles that you can turn to open or close, while the metal ones have a small ball that moves inside the valve to help control water flow through it.

Butterfly Valves

Butterfly valves are used in various applications, including water supply and wastewater. They are usually installed in the main lines of a plumbing system to prevent backflow or contamination.

Butterfly valves have a disc-shaped body with a hole in the center through which liquids flow out. The valve is held open by a spring that keeps the disc open when not being used. When you want to close the valve, you push down on the disc, and it will move over the hole, closing off the flow of liquid through it.

Globe Valves

Globe valves are simple and easy to operate, but they can be challenging to install. They have a single valve head with two openings, one of which is the supply port and the other is the outlet port. The globe valve uses a ball in the center port and is moved by turning a handle, and the ball prevents backflow into the drain or sewer line supply system.

Globe valves are often used for water supply lines because they are inexpensive and easy to install, and they are also used for drainage lines that carry wastewater out of buildings or houses. In addition to these common uses, globe valves can also be found in many industrial applications where they need to be opened or closed quickly without using any power source other than human hands.

Pressure Relief Valves

These valves prevent excess pressure from building up in a pipe. This can happen if a pipe becomes blocked or if someone flushes too much water down the drain at once. The pressure relief valve is designed to release some of that pressure, so it doesn't build up too high and cause damage to your home's pipes or appliances.
