PEX vs. Copper Pipes – Which Are Best for Your Home?

Are you thinking of building a new home? Have you recently purchased a historic property that’s in desperate need of a complete plumbing replacement? If you need new pipes, it’s easy to become overwhelmed at the options available. At Neighborhood Plumbing, we take pride in providing quality residential and commercial plumbing services in Pittsburgh, PA and surrounding cities. We’ve helped a lot of property owners determine which pipes will work best for their unique needs and budget, and want to help you do the same for your home or business. In this article, we will compare two of the most popular modern pipe materials, so you can make an informed decision about your new pipe installation project.

PEX Pipes

PEX, also known as cross-linked polyethylene, is a modern alternative to PVC, CPVC or copper tubing that’s commonly used for residential pipes. The material is resistant to damage and environmental stress, when compared to conventional PVC. It can also endure higher temperatures, which makes it excellent for use in hot water systems. The flexibility of PEX simplifies many plumbing projects and is relatively inexpensive when compared to metal material options. The disadvantages to using PEX is that some local codes restrict its use for certain plumbing functions. PEX materials must also be carefully protected from sun exposure and can’t be buried beneath the ground. Although PEX piping has been known to last for 25 years or more in good working condition, its longevity is less than other alternatives.

Copper Piping

Copper has been a popular choice for plumbing systems for many decades. The biostatic atmosphere created by the copper is resistant to bacterial growth. It’s much less corrosive than other forms of metal pipes, such as galvanized steel or brass. This makes it a very durable option for homeowners and can 50 years or more. Unlike PEX pipes, they can be buried in the ground and works fine when exposed to the sunlight and other environmental conditions. However, copper can be more expensive to install, and requires specialized soldering skills for repairs. Also, they are more susceptible to damage caused by frozen water in the winter, and can be noisy if they aren’t held firmly in place.

How to Know Which One is Right for Your Home?

Which decision is best for your family or business? There are many factors to consider including the amount of time needed to install pipes, your individual budget for the project, how long you prefer your pipes to last, local plumbing codes and regulations, and much more. Many people choose to combine the benefits of both by using both copper and PEX piping. This can reduce costs, speed up installation and makes it easier to follow certain city codes. It’s a good idea to consult a certified plumber in your area, and get quality advice before the planning process begins.
