It is easy to understand why poor water quality can be harmful for your health, but did you know that water quality is important for your plumbing system, appliances, and even the foundation of your building? Common Water Quality Problems
Water can contain a range of contaminants from heavy metals and minerals to microbes and pathogens. Some of the most common water quality problems include:

  • Hard Water: Though not a serious health hazard, hard water is water that contains high levels of minerals. A strong sign of hard water is chalky deposits on faucets, sinks, and silverware.
  • Wrong pH Levels: Pure water has a pH level of 7. Anything less is considered acidic and anything higher than 7 is basic. The EPA recommends that drinking water have a pH level between 6.5 and 8.5.
  • Foul Taste or Smell: Trust your senses. Really. If the water smells or tastes abhorrent, then have it tested. Smells can mean organic material that is decaying or bacteria, mold, and mildew growth in the pipes.

Health Risks of Low-Quality Water

Water is a source of life, for good and for worse. It is what keeps us going, but also gives life to bacteria and other microorganisms. Consuming poor-quality water is one way to contract waterborne infections. The Centers for Disease Control says the most common health problems associated with contaminated drinking water include:

  • Diarrhea: E. coli, giardiasis, norovirus, and shigellosis are just some of the bacteria and viruses that can cause diarrheal disease.
  • Kidney Failure: E. coli is also known to cause life-threatening kidney failure in severe cases.
  • Liver Infection: Hepatitis A, a virus, can cause serious liver infections.

Risks to Your Property
Water with high levels of minerals, or hard water, can cause mineral buildup in water pipes, heating systems, and appliances. Over time, this buildup can turn into a serious blockage that can lead to damage and leaking. Don’t risk having to repair or replace your appliances, drain line, or water heater. Test your water regularly or review your annual Consumer Confidence Report so that you can knowledgeably take the steps toward improving your water quality.
